Harvard synthetic biologist Yaakov Benenson is developing implantable computers capable of detecting chemical changes inside a cell. Eventually, such devices should enable us to monitor our vital statistics, take diagnostic tests, and receive treatment without ever going to the hospital. The results could be beamed wirelessly to health-care providers, raising the specter of eavesdropping.
