This is a talk given by Cary Fowler that stresses the importance of preserving the biodiversity of the world’s agriculture. Fowler points out that biodiversity is key to life. Our environment is constantly changing and biodiversity is vital for organisms to adapt to new living environments. Rice, beans, corn, etc. are no different. With climate change already upon us, it is uncertain if the current genetic makeup of the world’s agriculture will be able to adapt to the new environment. This issue, mixed with the fact that agribusiness has reduced the biodiversity of the world’s crops, could lead to a food crisis in the future. Fowler, along with other like-minded individuals around the world, have started a seed bank in a remote part of Norway that currently stores over a hundred thousand different types of seeds for corn, rice, beans, etc. Fowler looks to increase the number of seeds in Norway and to start other seed banks around the world.
